Duke Park Sculpture Project

     Duke Park Sculpture Project

An exciting new sculpture was installed in Duke Park recently, the outcome of a project by artist Marcus Tatton, the Risdon Vale Community and supported by Clarence City Council and the State Government through the Community Capacity Building Grants Program.

Clarence City Council delivered the project in close collaboration with Risdon Vale Neighbourhood Centre.

The sculpture titled Ronan’s Abstract will be a striking feature in the park for many years to come. The Risdon Vale neighbourhood centre was a key connection point between the local community, the artist and Clarence Council staff in the development of the project. Early on in the process of the park redevelopment the community identified that they wanted some form of public art in their park which is a focal point within the Risdon Vale community.

Approximately 100 community members were directly involved in the design, development and construction of the Public Artwork for the park. The opportunity to work with an artist on a cultural project of this type is not one that the community would normally have.  The project provided the opportunity for collective and individual participation in the development of a contemporary artwork for Risdon Vale.

Risdon Vale Primary School and Geilston Bay High School students worked closely with Marcus on designs for the sculpture and a concept sketch by 10 year old Ronan Walker was chosen to be adapted into the final work.
